Welcome to our Koresemi On-Demand Video Seminar that is ALL about the world of Japanese-to-English(日英)Media Translation! In this special video-on-demand seminar, we’ll be talking about what it’s really like working as a professional J-E media translator, fun and unique projects that JVTA graduates have worked on, tips for passing the JVTA trial, and other special info that you can only learn from J-E course graduates currently working in the J-E field.
This time, our on-demand seminar will have two parts:
◆ Part 1: Interview in English with JE translator/graduate Harumi Yamamoto about what it’s like to work as a freelance J-E media translator living in Canada, and about various subtitling and QC projects she has worked on.
◆ Part 2: Interview in English with JE translator/graduate Lee Stubbings, who will be talking about his shift from full-time in video game localization to freelance translation and what kind of work he has done as a media translator, including PLDL projects, film translation, and more.
Whether you are a current or past student of our J-E course, or have not studied J-E but are interested in learning more about it, we would love for you to join us. Don’t miss it!

【Panelists】
■Harumi Yamamoto (JVTA J-E Graduate/Translator)

Harumi is a freelance Japanese to English translator and localizer of works in visual media, based in Toronto, Canada. Having grown up in Japan and Canada, she is both bilingual and bicultural and her wish is for Japanese media to be accessed, enjoyed and to become successful in foreign markets for all people. She has a budding interest in accessibility in entertainment as well, and would like to see those hard of hearing or with visual disabilities also be able to enjoy Japanese audiovisual entertainment. Although she enjoys most entertainment genres, she particularly likes handling works that require nuance, sensitivity and humour, such as narrative films and Japanese serial comedies and dramas. She is an active volunteer at film festivals, and also serves the immigrant community in job search coaching and LinkedIn training.
■Lee Stubbings (JVTA J-E Graduate/Translator/Instructor)

Lee is a freelance translator based in Tokyo. With a background in creative writing, he brings a love of storytelling to his projects. In addition to subtitling, he has worked in video game localization as both a translator and a project manager, helping bring major Japanese works to international audiences.

◆KORESEMI Wisdom, Essential in a Time of Change
Japan Visualmedia Translation Academy Group CEO Naoki Niira
Our KORESEMI Panel the only extracurricular seminar that has been held every semester, without fail, since the establishment of Japan Visualmedia Translation Academy (JVTA) over twenty years ago. The progress of our students, our translators, and the panelists for this seminar is the progress of JVTA itself.
Today, freelancing is undergoing great change. We are in an age where the government has begun providing support and large corporations encourage side jobs. This applies to the visual media translation industry as well. Client companies are reviewing the laws and regulations of business, leading to a change in the way they evaluate and do business with translators. What challenges does this pose for professional translators, and how do they overcome them? KORESEMI is a unique opportunity to get a realistic perspective from actual translators, which can be hard to come by.
As the translators discuss how to manage your time and work area, or how to work with fellow translators, you’ll be able to hear a lot of fun personal anecdotes. These moments are part of what makes KORESEMI so special.
There is a reason this seminar has continued for over twenty years. It is not only effective in increasing learning and motivation, but is also a chance to gain information that will support you throughout your career.
I hope you join the seminar and make the best use of the experience in your daily work and studies.hope you join the seminar and make the best use of the experience in your daily work and studies.
