The JVTA Special Anime Program proudly presents Sasuke and Kamui: The Lone Ninja, two animated TV series, both of which have never been officially released outside Japan. First aired in the late 1960s, these series are considered pivotal in the history of Japanese anime. Based on manga by the legendary artist Sanpei Shirato, both vividly illustrate the struggles of people in feudal Japan through the eyes of ninja warriors. The three episodes specially selected for this program proved to Japan that anime could portray chaos, madness, and the ruthlessness of the real world. It’s hard to believe this shocking content was produced and aired as children’s entertainment. The JVTA Special Anime Program will reveal what Japan has long kept untold to the outside world – the naked truth about the life of ninjas.

 
About Sasuke
Deceivingly adorable characters thrown into a world of cruelty, merciless even to young children.

 
During the feudal Edo Period, a young ninja from the Koga school, Sasuke, along with his master ninja father, attempts to fight off the ceaseless attacks of assassins sent by the samurai government. While Sasuke shows no mercy for his enemies, he’s still a little boy who misses his dead mother. Children are among the many casualties in the story’s frequent battles, underlining the helplessness and sadness Sasuke faces as ninja. This is a testament to the bleak and inhumane conditions of society.

 
About Kamui the Lone Ninja
Born into darkness only to die by the underworld code, ninjas battle prejudice and oppression in the shadows of society.

 
Under the rule of the shogun, a strict caste system left the majority of Japanes in poverty and famine. Kamui, born into an outcaste area, decides to flee in search of freedom and pride, leaving his family to join a ninja clan. He soon finds out that what he envisioned was merely a fantasy. He leaves the clan to become forever a fugitive. Based on the manga masterpiece by legendary Sanpei Shirato, anime series Kamui, the Lone Ninja is back for the first time in its original uncut version.

 

忍者の無情なる生と死
~忍者好きというならば、あなたは忍者の何を知っているのか？~
60年代末に放映された忍者アニメ『サスケ』と『忍風カムイ外伝』。日本の漫画に革新をもたらした白土三平の原作によるこの２作のテレビシリーズは、その無情で過酷な世界観とリアルで生き生きとした人間描写、そして日本人でも知らない忍者の真髄を描いた、伝説的なアニメとして記憶されている。今回のJVTAスペシャルプログラムでは、これまで海外で紹介されることのなかったこの２作品から3エピソードを取り上げ英語字幕版を制作、忍者の世界の真実を世に問う。この内容で実際にテレビで子供向け番組として放映されていたことは驚き以外の何物でもない。刺激が強すぎて子供には見せられない！アメリカでは放送されることはまずないだろう。ここにあるのは日本がいまだ海外に伝えられていない忍者の姿、その真髄だ。

 
「サスケ」について
かわいらしい絵柄とは裏腹。
トラウマ必至、子供にすら情け容赦のない残酷な展開。

 
江戸時代、幕府の刺客との戦いを通じて、甲賀流の少年忍者サスケの成長を描いた作品。父と共に戦う中で心技体を磨いていくサスケ。生き残るために敵を倒す非情さを見せながらも、素顔は幼さを残す少年であり、亡き母親を慕い続ける。子供を含めた登場人物が大勢死ぬという過酷な展開の中、忍者たちの生はかなさ、哀しみを描く。不条理な世界に対する強いアンチテーゼが込められたドラマ。

 
「忍風カムイ外伝」について
闇に生まれ闇に消える忍びの掟。
人知れず差別と権力に抗い生きる哀しき姿を見よ。

 
徳川幕府による厳しい身分制度下、権力の重圧に民衆があえいでいた時代、非人部落の出身であるカムイは、自由と誇りを求め忍者になる。しかし、忍者の世界の非情な掟になじめず抜け忍となり、生涯追われる身となる。原作は白土劇画の代表作であるばかりでなく、日本コミック史上に燦然と輝く名作。現在では見ることのできないオリジナルノーカットバージョン上映。これを逃したら一生見る機会はない！
