あなたは日本のお笑い番組を面白く英訳する自信はありますか？
NetflixやAmazonプライム・ビデオなどの動画ストリーミング配信サービスの普及で、海外でも日本のコンテンツが手軽に視聴できるようになり、英語字幕の需要も高まっています。様々なジャンルのコンテンツがある中、特に英訳が難しいと言われているのが日本の「笑い」です。日本独特のコメディスタイルや言い回しなどを、映像翻訳者がどう理解し、表現するかで視聴者への伝わり方も変わってきます。「できるだけ本来の意味に近い表現を使って、日本語ネイティブと同じタイミングで笑わせたい」その目標に近づくためのヒントとなるのが8月17日（月）にライブ配信する「Laughing in Two Languages – Translating Japanese Comedy」です。
 
今回、日英映像翻訳科の講師であるアリス・バイロンとビル・ライリーが人気テレビ番組を題材に、日本のコメディの特徴や文化とのつながり、伝え方などのコツを解説します。あなたの英訳で世界の人たちが笑顔になる日も近い？！
 
映像翻訳者をすでに目指している方はもちろん、これから目指す方、日本のお笑いが好きな方、日本のポップカルチャーに興味を持っている方など、どんな方でも楽しんでいただける内容になっています。
 
Ask any translator, and they’ll usually tell you that comedy is the toughest genre of all to translate. But if we were to cut all the funny stuff out of Japanese media and pop culture, there wouldn’t be much left! If you’re ready to take on the challenge, flex your funny bones and join JVTA+ on August 17 (Mon) for Laughing in Two Languages – Translating Japanese Comedy.
 
Alice Byron and Bill Riley will be your hosts as we break down what makes Japanese humor so unique. We’ll look at real examples from Japan’s quirky comedy culture, and explore strategies to keep the laughs from getting lost in translation.
This workshop will be a fun challenge for Japanese-to-English media translators at any career stage, well as fans of Japanese comedy and pop culture, and anyone who could use a laugh.

パソコンやタブレットなどで安定して動画配信サービスなどを視聴できる環境が整っていれば、無料でご参加いただけます。
※非日本語ネイティブの方は、日本語能力試験Ｎ２以上
PC or Tablet with a stable internet connection and video playback.
(Note: In order to get the most out of this workshop, we recommend a minimum Japanese proficiency level roughly equivalent to JLPT N2 or similar.)

 
【講師 Meet the Instructors】
アリス・バイロン

プロの映像翻訳者を育成する社会人向けスクール「日本映像翻訳アカデミー」所属。オーストラリア、シドニー市出身。シドニー大学を卒業後、渡日。ゲームローカライズの現場からキャリアをスタートし、日本のポップカルチャーの魅力を世界に発信する様々な業務を経験。現在は日本映像翻訳アカデミーの講師としても活躍している。
Alice Byron
Alice is a translator for the School division of JVTA. Since graduating from Sydney University in Australia and beginning her career in video game translation, she’s devoted her life to bringing the best of Japanese pop culture and media to a wider audience around the world.
 
ビル・ライリー

JVTAでは講師として活躍すると同時に日本語学習者向けの講座開発も担当。10数年前に日本に移り住み、ショーのプロデュースから、大阪府教育委員会での英語授業のカリキュラム監修など幅広い分野での経験を持つ。身につけた言語を巧みに操り、企業やクリエイターたちの商品やサービスを海外に発信するサポートも行っている。
Bill Riley
Instructor Bill Reilly developed JVTA’s unique pop culture based curriculum for Japanese language learners. For the past 10 years, he’s also been involved in producing live shows and entertainment, as well as a wide variety of intercultural education roles.
