In this very special seminar, we invite award-winning manga translation editor Sarah Tangney to share her experiences and give you an inside look into the world of manga localization and publishing. Sarah currently works for the global branch of Square Enix’s publishing division. We’ll hear from her about what goes into manga translation and editing, what the the process of translating and publishing manga in English looks like, what skills she looks for in manga translators, and more. We’ll also hear more about specific titles Sarah has worked on and what it was like bringing those titles to bookshelves around the world.
You don’t need to be a translator yourself – if you’re a manga fan and want to learn more about the behind-the-scenes process of bringing manga to English-speaking audiences, don’t miss this seminar!

Sarah Tangney
Sarah is a US-based manga editor at Square Enix Manga & Books. She began her localization career in Tokyo, working at a series of mobile game publishers, before moving back to the US and transitioning to freelance J-E translator and editor. As a freelancer, she focused on light novels, visual novels, mobile games, and console video games (including Nintendo Switch games Rune Factory 5 and Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes). Since 2022, she has been in-house as an editor assigned to Square Enix titles such as Cherry Magic!, Tokyo Aliens, My Happy Marriage, and many others, preparing them for English-language print publication. In 2025, one of her titles (The Otaku Love Connection, translated by minami) won an American Manga Award for Best Translation.

Jessi Nuss (J-E Course Director and Instructor at JVTA)
Originally from California in the US, Jessi oversees the content and management of JVTA’s Japanese-to-English Media Translation Course, and is also involved in teaching classes and seminars related to J-E media translation. A longtime Japanese pop culture enthusiast, she loves the challenge that J-E media translation presents, and sharing the fun of it with students at JVTA.
