JVTAではスクールに併設された受発注部門が皆さんのデビューをサポートしています。映像翻訳の仕事は映画やドラマだけではありません。特に日英映像翻訳ではマンガやゲーム、企業のPR動画など幅広いジャンルがあり、翻訳者が体験してきた職歴や趣味などを生かして活躍しています。今回はOJTを終え、日英の映像翻訳者としてデビューする修了生を紹介します。

◆岡田哲史さん
職歴：直近3年間は地域おこし協力隊（多文化共生）として活動。それ以前は10数年間、複数の外資系企業にて品質・工程改善・コンプライアンス等の業務に従事。全ての職務で日英2言語による業務を遂行。シンガポールとニュージーランドに在住経験有。

【JVTAを選んだ理由、JVTAでの思い出】
歴史ある企業で盤石であること、オンラインで受講できること、受講→トライアル→デビューの道筋を示していること、外国語の他にバリアフリーなど多角的に取り組んでいること…を総合的に利点と感じ選びました。思い出は、課題はどれも興味深いのですが、他の受講生の訳と自分の訳を比べて粗が多くて落ち込むことばかりでした。トライアルも複数回落ちたので遠回りしたという感じです。それでも、トライアルで学んだこと、気づかせてもらったことが多々あり「一番の近道は遠回り」という言葉をしみじみ感じています。講師の皆様、一緒に学んだ受講生の皆様、JVTAの職員の皆様に感謝申し上げます。

【日英翻訳の魅力】
どちらかと言うと、通訳はその場を即時的に回していく演出力・瞬発力が必要で、字幕翻訳は特に作品・文脈・背景を深く考える思考力と字数制限に合わせる調整力が必要だと思います。じっくり考えて整合させていい訳に収斂させていく過程はとても楽しいです。翻訳者として最も興味があるのは市区町村のシティプロモーション映像です。その他も不得意・知らないと決めつけずに、謙虚に幅広く取り組みたいです。

【今後どんな作品を手がけたい？】
The genre that surprised me the most, in terms of how enjoyable it was, was documentary. The amount of research and preparation required is absolutely daunting, but it’s all the more satisfying to see at the end how much I’ve learned in the process. And speaking of satisfying, spotting! I would love more opportunities to work on the ultra-granular side of things.

【JVTAを選んだ理由、JVTAでの思い出】
Several years ago, I attended my first translation conference. One of the attendees I met was a graduate of JVTA, and she couldn’t recommend it enough. I signed up for the next available semester, equal parts excited and intimidated by the curriculum, and while the workload was No Joke, each project was incredibly enlightening. I also learned so much from my classmates themselves and the work they created.

◆David Palomoさん
職歴：Musician, Screen Printer, Teacher, English Instructor

【今後どんな作品を手がけたい？】
Unlike most people, my love of Japanese started with music. I’m a huge music nerd and one day, through the magic of the internet, I stumbled upon music from Japan. Not being able to understand what was being said, I bought a Japanese-English dictionary written completely in Romaji and attempted to translate lyrics. Needless to say, it didn’t go well. However, it sparked my interest in the language, and ultimately in translation. I have a deep knowledge of Japanese musicians as well as actors, writers, and directors, so I would love it if I was able to work on translations for music videos, interviews, or PR materials. In addition, translating a movie or drama written by Bakarhythm or Kankuro Kudo would be a dream come true.

【今後の目標】
I love independent music and film. There is a whole world of Japanese entertainment that exists apart from giant robots and idol groups. Although I’m a fan of mainstream entertainment as well, it’s the smaller, lesser-known musicians, directors, and writers that interest me the most. One of my main goals is to be able to put a spotlight on smaller creators and to help them expand their fan base beyond Japan.
