How would you translate this? Come test your skills! (All levels welcome) Our popular seminar series is back – for our second Japanese-to-English installment, we’re diving into a scene from a Japanese short film, and we want to build the subtitles with you! Participants are asked to hand in their own translations beforehand. Two JVTA J-E translation course instructors will break down the scene and provide on-the-spot feedback on your translations. You’ll explore the technicalities of the subtitling process and discover how to handle uniquely Japanese expressions and casual slang. Complete beginners and current/past JVTA students are all welcome. *This seminar will be conducted in English.
This seminar is for: – Those interested in Japanese-to-English translation – Graduates of our English-to-Japanese course who are interested in Japanese-to-English translation – Current students and graduates of our Japanese-to-English course – Those looking to improve their English writing skills – Those looking to improve their translation skills etc.
What we’ll cover: – About the film – About the assigned scene – Tricky sections in the assignment: what is the best approach? – Using participants’ translations to subtitle the scene
Haruna Yokoyama (J-E Instructor and Translator) Haruna is a Tokyo-based media translator and instructor. She began her career at a Los Angeles-based import-export company, and began studying subtitling at JVTA’s Los Angeles campus and moved to Japan in 2011 to finish her studies at the Tokyo campus. In 2013, Haruna completed the J-E media translation course and made her debut as a professional subtitle translator. As a freelancer, she now works on J-E translation projects and also does interpreting, editing, and transcription.
Shoko Asano (J-E Instructor and Translation Director) Raised in Germany and New Zealand, Shoko completed the J-E translation course at JVTA, and went on to work as a freelance audiovisual translator before joining the Translation Support Group (TSG), where she now manages both E-J and J-E projects.

In this very special seminar, we invite award-winning manga translation editor Sarah Tangney to share her experiences and give you an inside look into the world of manga localization and publishing. Sarah currently works for the global branch of Square Enix’s publishing division. We’ll hear from her about what goes into manga translation and editing, what the the process of translating and publishing manga in English looks like, what skills she looks for in manga translators, and more. We’ll also hear more about specific titles Sarah has worked on and what it was like bringing those titles to bookshelves around the world.

Sarah Tangney Sarah is a US-based manga editor at Square Enix Manga & Books. She began her localization career in Tokyo, working at a series of mobile game publishers, before moving back to the US and transitioning to freelance J-E translator and editor. As a freelancer, she focused on light novels, visual novels, mobile games, and console video games (including Nintendo Switch games Rune Factory 5 and Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes). Since 2022, she has been in-house as an editor assigned to Square Enix titles such as Cherry Magic!, Tokyo Aliens, My Happy Marriage, and many others, preparing them for English-language print publication. In 2025, one of her titles (The Otaku Love Connection, translated by minami) won an American Manga Award for Best Translation.
Jessi Nuss (J-E Course Director and Instructor at JVTA) Originally from California in the US, Jessi oversees the content and management of JVTA’s Japanese-to-English Media Translation Course, and is also involved in teaching classes and seminars related to J-E media translation. A longtime Japanese pop culture enthusiast, she loves the challenge that J-E media translation presents, and sharing the fun of it with students at JVTA.
Code of Ethicsの全体像と主要な遵守ポイントを解説し、AI翻訳・PE（ポストエディット）が急速に普及する現状を倫理規定に照らして分析します。 映像翻訳から産業翻訳まで、AI翻訳の活用が急速に広がりを見せる今、翻訳者の仕事は「なくなることが懸念される」段階から「求められるスキルやクオリティが変わる」段階に入っています。そんな中、グローバルな視点から注目したいのが、海外の翻訳先進国で国家資格の一環として運用されているCode of Ethics（倫理規定）です。
本セミナーでは、オーストラリア・アメリカ・EU圏の制度を比較しながらCode of Ethicsの全体像と主要な遵守ポイントを解説し、AI翻訳・PE（ポストエディット）が急速に普及する現状を倫理規定に照らして分析します。2025年に始まったAUSIT（オーストラリア通訳翻訳者協会）倫理規定の見直しや、2026年8月に本格施行されるEU AI Actなど最新の動向にも触れ、インタラクティブなシナリオワークを通じて、これからの映像翻訳者が知っておくべき倫理の基礎と、AI時代に求められる判断力を体験的に学びます。
